Our mother tells of one of the local boys (perhaps one of the Clarke boys) knocking on the door one summer afternoon. Jessie was about 12 years of age and frankly, had a great deal of energy and competitive in nature. “Sister Felt, would you call Jessie home please”? after Mom answered the door. “And why should I do that” was the tactful response. There followed some pregnant silence. “Is there a problem I should know about”? again with Mom’s gentle nature. “Well……” he started only to stumble a bit. “Could you just call Jessie home?” “I suppose so but I would need to know why” “You see . . . . . . we are playing touch football and Jessie keeps winning” was the reply.
